An English-Chinese Dictionary of Contemporary Slang

英语是当今世界一大语种，在国际上居有重要应用地位。俚语在英语日常应用中具有相当比重，可谓十分丰富多彩。然而我国英语学习者大多由于缺少从多方面熟悉英语的条件，所以每每于交际、学习和翻译英语时，常因俚语几乎是盲点而甚难应付。例如在上世纪80至90年代，我在美国几所大学执教期间，曾遇到过不少中国留学生。他们由于过去对英语俚语很少接触，尤其对俚语之组合，往往只识其中之单词而不知其义；并且由于一时不易找到相应的辞书，而感到十分困惑，难以应对。这如同在国内，有些外国的汉语学习者遇到广为流行的沪语（吴方言）“白相”一词一样，二字虽然明明相识，但不知其义为“游玩”；又如不知“好白相”意即“好玩”；“白相人”又是指“流氓”等等。不过凡此不谙英语俚语，问题不在于中国留学生，因为我们国内英语教学大多侧重“应试教育”，学生所学的多为传统规范的英语，所得的知识也基本上是书本知识，就自然较难接触到英语国家日常生活中不断滋生和广泛流传的俚语，于是对俚语就难免甚感不易理解和运用。
　　 鉴于目前在国内缺乏这类较全面地介绍英语俚语的工具书，肖章同志所主编的这部《英汉俚语大词典》是适时、必要和有意义的。这部辞书，由于具有收词内容丰富、范围较广、编写体例和格式较简洁明了、译解和例句通俗易懂等诸多特点，因此定能便于读者一查即得，使之成为国内当今较为实用和值得推荐的一部英语俚语工具书。我相信，这一项由编著者们花了大量精力和时间铸成的硕果，将会被广大读者所欢迎和受用的。
