Easy Steps to Chinese 2 - Textbook

Easy Steps to Chinese adopts a new approach to teaching Chinese as a foreign language. It is designed for both primary and secondary school students who are taking Chinese exams, such as GCSE/IGCSE/AS (U.K.), SAT II/AP (U.S.A.), IB Chinese Language B Standard Level, or for those students starting to learn Chinese on their own. While completing this series, the students will acquire a vocabulary of about 1,600 Chinese characters, and develop confidence in using Chinese to communicate either orally or in written form. Chinese for English-Speakers Advanced Textbook

Chinese for English Speakers includes three levels: primary, intermediate and advanced; each level contains two volumes, one is textbook and the other is workbook. Each level contains 22 lessons which can be learned for universities of foreign countries for about almost 1 year. Freshman uses the primary level, sophomore uses the intermediate level and junior uses the advanced level. The series is written in traditional character in Chinese and simplified Chinese character. The advanced volume includes 22 lessons and they are divided to three parts. The first part is from lesson 1 to lesson 4 and it reflects Chinese culture. The second part is from lesson five to lesson nineteen and it introduces famous people in or out of China, at present or in the history. The third part is from lesson 20 to 22 and it reflects the social problems of China.

Chinese for English-Speakers Advanced Workbook

This book is part of the series of Chinese for English-Speakers, which include three textbooks (Primary, Intermediate, Advanced), companioned by three workbooks (Primary, Intermediate, Advanced) and a primary character book.

Advanced Textbook can be divided into three parts: Lessons 1 to 4; Lessons 5 to 19; and Lessons 20 to 22. The first part mainly introduces Chinese culture in a historical way. The second part covers various aspects from China and abroad. In introducing Chinese and global celebrities, for example, we choose topics about Sun Yat-sen, Mei Lanfang, Marco Polo and Bill Gates to profile their life or personality. And even in other common stories, the characters also show a profound personality or a traditional moral attitude towards life and culture. The learner can sense out something typical in the common Chinese of all walks of life, young or old, male or female. The third part explains some focused issues of present China, introducing some topics about China's peasants, population control, education, economical development and environmental protection, etc., which are mainly concerned by many curious foreigners.

Adavanced Workbook continues some exercises on Word-building, Phrase, New Words and Grammar within a more difficult sense. The new exercise "Fill in the blanks with the words in the text" is designed to improve the learner's comprehension of the text. If the learner cannot understand the text, he/she will not remember and know how to use the words and expressions properly. "Topic Exercise" and "Dialogue Exercise", of course, require the learner to express him/herself in Chinese in a more proper way.

Advanced Textbook is designed for about 4 to 6 hours' study per week for about one year's teaching.

Reading Newspaper to Learning Chinese Volume 2


Before compiling the book, the author organized a survey among 179 foreign students to find out their interest in newspapers. The topics top on the list include finding job, traveling and network issues; these then become main topics in the book. All the articles chosen for the book were published on Chinese newspapers or website during the period of 2002 to 2004 and the choice of topics takes into consideration of common interest, update, universal values and stability. The articles are of reasonable difficulty with explicit language points and practical usefulness. The new words and phrases for each article have three translations in English, Japanese and Korean to make sure that the learners mastering different native languages can understand the articles completely and thoroughly.
