《汉译英中的习语翻译》讲习语翻译，翻译不容易，而将汉语中很多习惯说法用地道的英语表达出来更是难上加难了。尽管在我国的翻译文献中探讨英汉翻译的文章数以千计，但专门研讨汉语习语英译的文章并非很多。大概是由于这方面的研究难以把握吧。
现举一例：我们中国人讲的“受气包儿”该如何翻译?相信学过十几年英语的学生也未必能用地道的英语将此概念译出。其实，英语中有个doormat(放在门口的垫子)，就是我们中国人所说的“受气包儿”。确实，用地道的英语表示我们汉语中的很多概念决非易事。汉译英之难表现在以下三个方面：
其一，环境问题。我们在学校学习英语时接触的大都是标准的书面用语，对于英美人在生活中实际使用的俚语、双关语、习语、谚语、委婉语以及行话等我们都很陌生。即使是从事英语翻译工作多年的专业人员也未必能说出诸如“爱生气”、“糊弄人”、“好处费”、“一根筋”、
“傻大个儿”、“矮胖墩儿”以及“乐天派”之类汉语习语的英语表达法。
其二，思维问题。中国人有中国人的思维方式，英美人有英美人的思维方式。用我们固定的思维方式去讲另一种语言，尽管不会出现语法问题，但会出现思想概念的表达错误。把“交通工具”说成tansportation tools，把“白象牌运动鞋”译成是white—elephant brand
sports shoes，把“没什么好说的”译成是have nothing good to say，以及把“随便吃点儿”译成freely eat little之类的现象，都是由于不懂得英美人的思维方式而造成的表达错误。
其三，文化差异问题。众所周知，语言是文化的载体：汉语承载着大量的中国文化的信息，英语承载着大量的英语国家的文化信息。要想用地道的英语表达汉语的语言现象当然就不是一件很容易的事。比如：我们中国人习惯用黄色意喻色情杂志，而英美人则习惯用蓝色形容这类
东西。再比如：我们习惯说“恨之入骨”，而英美人则习惯用hate sb.'sguts（恨之入肠）。这都是文化差异给语言表达所带来的不同。
